In recognition of World Glaucoma Week 2026, Empowerment for Sustainable Livelihood will conduct a multi-day community engagement initiative designed to improve awareness, early detection, and preventive practices related to glaucoma within underserved populations.
Glaucoma remains one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness globally, often progressing without noticeable symptoms until significant vision loss has occurred. In many low-resource settings, late presentation and limited access to screening contribute to avoidable disability and economic hardship. This activity is structured to address these gaps through targeted education and service delivery.
Objectives
Increase community understanding of glaucoma risk factors, symptoms, and prevention
Encourage routine eye examinations and early detection practices
Provide accessible screening opportunities for individuals with limited healthcare access
Facilitate referrals for participants requiring clinical follow-up
Core Activities
Community outreach sessions explaining glaucoma and vision preservation
Educational talks delivered by trained facilitators and health professionals
Distribution of informational materials promoting preventive eye care
Basic screening support and referral linkage to eye care providers
Media and local stakeholder engagement to broaden awareness reach
Target Population
Adults aged 40+
Individuals with family history of eye disease
Persons living with diabetes or hypertension
Community members with limited access to routine eye care
Expected Outcomes
Improved awareness and behavioural change toward preventive eye care
Increased screening participation
Early identification of at-risk individuals
Strengthened referral pathways between community and clinical services
This initiative forms part of ESL’s ongoing commitment to reducing preventable health burdens through community-centred advocacy, education, and partnership-driven service delivery.
