Go Green Glaucoma Cricket Championship 2026

The primary objective of this initiative was to create widespread awareness about glaucoma among the general public attending the event. Every component of the cricket match was carefully designed using glaucoma-related terminology so that education could be seamlessly integrated with recreation.

This event marks a consistent effort over the years, as the glaucoma awareness cricket match has been conducted annually from 2020 to 2026, completing seven consecutive years of sustained public engagement and awareness promotion.

The match began with a unique Gonioscopic Toss, where captains called for open angles or closed angles instead of the conventional heads or tails. This creative approach introduced key glaucoma concepts to the audience right from the beginning.

All awards and recognitions were thoughtfully aligned with various aspects of glaucoma diagnosis and management. The winning team was honoured with the Green Glaucoma Cricket Championship title. Individual performances were recognised with themed awards. The player of the match received the Ocular Hypertensive Man of the Match award. The highest run-scorer was named the Applanative Tonometric Batsman, while the most economical and effective bowler was awarded the Compliant Economic Bowler title. The batsman with the maximum number of boundaries was recognised as the Peripheral Iridotomic Batsman, and the most dynamic fielder was awarded the title Visual Fielder.

The competing teams, Open Angle Glaucoma and Closed Angle Sixers, represented the two major forms of the disease, further reinforcing awareness through sport. The guiding motto of the event was that glaucoma diagnosis may help win matches, but adherence to treatment, regular follow-up, and timely re-treatment ultimately win the tournament.

By leveraging the immense popularity of cricket in India, this initiative aimed to effectively communicate the importance of early diagnosis, treatment compliance, and continuous monitoring in glaucoma care. Enhancing public awareness remains crucial in preventing irreversible vision loss, and this innovative approach made learning about glaucoma both engaging and impactful.
