DESCRIPTION:As part of World Glaucoma Week\, a Health Education Programme w
 as conducted at\nJawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education an
 d Research (JIPMER)\,\nPuducherry\, on 10 March 2026 at the SSB Auditorium
 . The programme aimed to create\nawareness among the public about glaucoma
 \, a leading cause of irreversible blindness\nworldwide.The Welcome Addres
 s was delivered by Dr Ramesh Babu\, Professor and Head\nof the Department.
  The Chief Guest Address was delivered by Dr Saka Vinod Kumar\,\nMedical S
 uperintendent\, JIPMER\, Puducherry. He emphasized the importance of early
 \ndetection and regular eye examinations to prevent vision loss due to gla
 ucoma. As part of the\nevent\, prizes were distributed to the winners of c
 ompetitions conducted during the awareness\nweek. A special Glaucoma Aware
 ness Talk titled “Know Glaucoma” was delivered by\nDr. Subashini Kalia
 perumal\, Professor and Head of Glaucoma Services\, who explained\nhow gla
 ucoma can silently rob a person of vision if not detected through regular 
 eye\nexaminations. The session was interactive\, during which she addresse
 d and clarified the\ndoubts raised by members of the public and patients. 
 The programme also featured an\neducational video presentations as part of
  a competition (“Reel for Sight”) on glaucoma\nawareness and a role pl
 ay performed by doctors\, which helped educate the audience about\nthe sym
 ptoms\, risk factors\, and preventive measures related to glaucoma. The ev
 ent was well\nattended by glaucoma patients and their families\, general p
 ublic\, nursing staff\, housekeeping\nstaff\, postgraduate students and fa
 culty of JIPMER.\nThrough this initiative\, JIPMER reiterated its commitme
 nt to increasing public awareness\nabout glaucoma and highlighted the impo
 rtance of early diagnosis and timely treatment in\npreventing avoidable bl
 indness.
