SUMMARY:Glaucoma Week 2024
DESCRIPTION:FROM: MARCH 11 TO 16\, 2024 WEEK OF THE FIGHT AGAINST GLAUCOMA
 \nIN CLINIK OF OPHTHALMOLOGY\, UKC KRAGUJEVAC\, \nSERBIА\n\nGlaucoma is a
common name for a group of eye diseases (optic neuropathy). It is a chron
ic\, incurable disease\, which can nevertheless be kept under control with
regular monitoring and treatment. Glaucoma represents a unique\, currentl
y significant\, social-health problem of all societies.\nThe doctors of th
e Clinic of ophthalmolody\, University Medical Center Kragujevac\, Serbia
are joining\, as in previous years\, in the celebration of World Glaucoma
Week in the period from March 11 to 16\, 2024.\nIt is an opportunity to dr
aw the attention of the public to the seriousness of this disease\, which
leads to blindness\, if it is not diagnosed and treated in time\, as well
as to the risk factors for the occurrence of glaucoma\, methods of prevent
ion and treatment options. The action aims to recognize and acquaint the g
eneral population with the emphasized importance of regular\, ophthalmolog
ical controls in the missions of preventing blindness\, to which untreated
and uncontrolled glaucoma surely leads.\nThe doctors of Clinic of ophthal
mology\, UKC Kragujevac\, Serbia will perform preventive examinations from
  March 11 to 16\, 2024\, from 12:00 to 14:00 p.m. in both specialist eye c
linics on the ground floor of UKC Kragujevac. Ophthalmologists will conduc
t an action to measure eye pressure and other necessary measures\, for all
interested citizens\, without an appointment\, without instructions and w
ith an ID-card.\nThe aim of the action is early detection (screening and p
revention) of glaucoma\, i.e. the disease of elevated eye pressure\, detec
tion of risk factors for the occurrence of glaucoma\, so it is advised tha
t first of all citizens who are over 40 years old\, who have not had this
type of examination before\, who have a relative suffering from glaucoma\,
but also patients diagnosed with glaucoma. Also included are people who f
requently change glasses\, people who have thin corneas\, myopics\, diabet
ics\, people with high or low blood pressure\, and others.\nAccording to d
ata from the World Health Organization\, glaucoma is the second most commo
n cause of blindness in the world and affects about 80 million people. Abo
ut 118 million people have a predisposition to get glaucoma by 2040\, of w
hich over four and a half million are blind. Even 50% of people do not kno
w they have glaucoma. In Serbia\, about 150\,000 people have this disease.
About 2% of the population over 40 years of age develops primary open-ang
le glaucoma\, while the percentage increases to over 4% for ages 80 and ov
er.\nIn a large number of cases\, there are no signs that warn us of the r
esulting glaucoma\, but a latent\, insidious disease. There is no method a
vailable today that reliably predicts glaucoma before the onset of the dis
ease\, and to date it has not even been diagnosed in the percentage in whi
ch it is actually present in the world and in our population.\nDetailed ex
amination of suspected glaucoma\, or glaucoma? It is required as a first e
xamination between the ages of 35 and 40\, two to four times a year after
the age of 40\, one to two times a year after the age of 55\, more often a
nd/or individually.\nThe safe level of eye pressure is not the same for ev
ery individual or patient\, but indicates an important guide to keep the d
isease under control\, and that regular examinations by an ophthalmologist
are necessary\, even if the eye pressure has been successfully lowered wi
th drugs\, laser and/or surgery in the physiological range borders.\nPreve
ntive\, regular and detailed examinations by an ophthalmologist\, as well
as this action\, will help to detect the disease in time\, keep it under c
ontrol and treat it. Glaucoma therapy at the right moment aims to stop the
disease at the developmental level\, to keep eye pressure within physiolo
gical limits\, to ultimately enable a good\, better quality of life and pr
event disabilities.\nThe weeks of the fight against glaucoma in our countr
y stood out and were confirmed through many years of practice\, profession
and science\, justifiably highlighting the public importance of the neces
sary knowledge and skills\, which can be applied today in the prevention\,
diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma.\nSuccessful cooperation between heal
th care institutions and the media can be a useful way of increasing aware
ness and detecting individuals with an increased risk of developing glauco
ma\, as well as the necessary controls of already diagnosed glaucoma.\n\nR
esults:\nIn the Week of the fight against glaucoma in March\, 2024\, 595 p
eople were included\, with 15 newly diagnosed glaucomas.\n\n11-16/03/2024\
nprof. dr Mirjana A. Janićijević Petrović\, ophthalmologist\nClinic for
  Ophthalmology\, UKC Kragujevac\, Serbia\nFaculty of Medical Sciences\, Un
 iversity of Kragujevac\, Serbia\n
